Images Sensors Market to Pick up from 2012
06 August 2009
Leatherhead, UK, August 6, 2009. The global image sensor market is expected to contract over the next couple of years due to the current economic downturn. However, from 2012 the market will exhibit robust growth, reaching $6.5 billion by 2014. Yearly growth rates of eight to nine percent are expected from 2012, according to a major new study by IntertechPira.
The Future of Image Sensors provides detailed five-year forecasts of the image sensors market by device type, end-use application and geographic region. It also forecasts the image sensor equipment markets by tool to 2014, and addresses emerging technology trends and new product development taking place in the industry.
The five years to 2014 are expected to be important for the image sensors market. The challenge facing the many companies that have chosen to back the technology is expanding the market. According to the study, 2000-08 could be viewed as phase one for the image sensor market and companies will have to instigate phase two by introducing the next generations of devices. Looking further ahead there may even be phase three devices based on polymeric thin films or nanoscale structures. Much is at stake, but the rewards for success are predicted to be substantial.
The next decade is expected to see the development of the phase two devices. They will be more sophisticated than today's device structures and will offer commensurately higher performance. A key focus of the study is the development of new products that have the best combination of performance and pricing. According to the study, industry players will try to expand their markets to new users in developing regions as well as trying to get existing users to buy the latest next-generation products.
The study provides forecasts to 2014 for image sensor devices in their major end-use markets, such as telecommunications, computer, consumer, automotive, military and industrial. It also forecasts the market by megapixel count as well as addresses key technology challenges, such as sensitivity and efficiency, packaging and thermal management, and pixel size and cost.
Despite the mature nature of the mobile phone market, mobile devices have continued to represent the largest application area for image sensors. In 2014 the study predicts that they will still account for around 31% of the total market. "The mobile communications sector will remain the most important application area for the devices, and the extent to which it thrives will have a great impact on the device business and on its supply chain," according to Publisher Adam Page.
While mobile devices have become the largest application area for image sensors, growth in other end-user applications over the five years to 2014 will also drive the market. These include webcams, still and video cameras, and car sensors.
