Anti-counterfeiting hits Napa Valley

Several of Napa Valley's most prestigious wineries have signed deals for a system from Eastman Kodak that uses invisible markers added to inks and other packaging components.

Colgin Cellars, HL Vineyards, Vineyard 29 and Staglin Family Vineyard are all using the technology.

The system involves putting proprietary markers, which Kodak will describe only as a "forensically undetectable material" into pack components such as printing inks, varnishes, and papers. The materials can only be detected by a Kodak hand-held reader, also proprietary, which incorporates laser technology.

The number of wineries looking to protect their brands is increasing year on year. In March 2007, two wine associations, Cercle Rive Droite and Alliance Rive Gauche, announced plans to use a variable printing protection label system from Swiss technology company Algoril to protect valuable vintages.

No doubt more wineries will be following this trend later in the year.
